Meet Dr. Jonna

I am an Airdrie girl. Raised in the Plainsmen Arena and various baseball diamonds around town. George Mac, Mount Royal and U of C alumni. Even though my middle years took me around the world I am very proud to once again call Airdrie home. To raise my family here and to be a business owner here in this great little town of ours.

ABORM Fellow & OBAA Member

Fertility and obstetrics have been my practice goals since my second year in the Academy of Classical Oriental Medicine. Helping women understand their menstrual cycle, feel comfortable talking about it, and taking control of it  is an amazing thing. Second only to helping a couple become pregnant and supporting them throughout their journey into parenthood. I take great pride in having worked to become a Fellow of the American Board of Reproductive Medicine as well as a member of the Obstetrical Acupuncture Association. These alliances help keep me at the forefront of our profession in two of my favourite areas of practice.

My Journey

My early post-secondary choices were driven by volleyball. I attended Mount Royal so that I could play volleyball…and get my Athletic Therapy Diploma. I moved on to the U of C so that I could play volleyball…and get my BSc. in Kinesiology. During my time studying I realized that the dream of my nine year old self, to become a heart surgeon, wasn’t the dream of my twenty year old self. I moved to Ecuador after university because I was given the chance to teach 8th grade science…and play volleyball and it was there that I had the time to explore what was missing for me in mainstream allopathic care. I read the book “The web that has no weaver” and soon after started looking for Chinese Medicine Colleges in Canada.

Educational Background

I graduated from George McDougall High School here in Airdrie. I then went on to earn my Diploma in Athletic Therapy from Mount Royal. After which I continued on to the University of Calgary. At the U of C I was given then opportunity to do research with a Heritage Foundation Grant from the Government of Alberta. I spent two years with some amazing post grads and doctors. We had five papers published in that two year span and the experience was unforgettable. I ended up leaving U of C with my BSc. in Kinesiology, a hunger for more information and a lot of questions about what was missing from the traditional allopathic model. Life lead me to the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences in Nelson, BC. There, under the direction of Warren Fischer, I began my education in Chinese culture and history and language and medicine. After three years in Nelson I made the journey even further west to the Canadian College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Here I was able to study under the  mentorship of many doctors with many different philosophies. I was also given the opportunity to finish the last five months of my Doctorate at the University Hospital in Cheng Du, China.

Professional Experience

From 2009-2012 I was working in a clinic in Victoria, BC that was directly affiliated with the Victoria Fertility Centre. For those years 90% of my patients were trying to conceive naturally or through IVF or IUI procedures and 90% of the patients I helped get pregnant stayed on throughout their pregnancy into parenthood. It was certainly trial by fire for a newly graduated practitioner but I loved it. Everyday was an opportunity to learn something new. Everyone who works with couples trying to conceive knows that the journey is not always smooth and for those three years I experienced every high and every low right along side my patients. It was challenging and so very rewarding. In 2012, I moved back to China to do another internship in the Provincial Hospital in Xi’an. I also had the opportunity while I was there to work alongside gynaecology and reproductive specialists at the Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, the Jiangsu Province People’s Hospital, and the Qinhuai Hospital of Chinese Medicine. When I returned to Canada I worked for six months in Vancouver alongside the Bloom Community Midwives until I was called to be closer to family and moved back to Airdrie. I have been very fortunate to work in two wonderful Chiropractic spaces here in Airdrie but I am so proud to now be co-owner of Airdrie’s first Acupuncture only clinic with my good friend and colleague Dr. Katie.
